KAP Diagnostics commissioned the refurbishment of a cluster of disused buildings including an old car showroom and mechanics garage, in order to locate their new UK headquarters.
The project demonstrates excellence in regeneration within an area of Rochdale which primarily consist of light-industrial uses and small retail parks. Early in the design process it was determined that it would be cost effective to utilise the existing, disparate but adjoining buildings on-site.
This cluster of building ranging in conditions, were essentially structurally sound however required a full overhaul of the interior; new services and re-cladding to the exterior in order to unify into one single building and meet current regulations. Across the site the buildings were reduced to one-storey with a new pitched roof providing added internal volume to the workshop area.

Externally it was clad in a profiled fibre-cement board, typically utilised in agricultural buildings, but re-appropriated as an economical; sustainable; secure and low maintenance rain-screen system, which through careful detailing of the window reveals; concealed guttering; parapets and verges provides a crisp contrast to the industrial heritage of its urban context. The brief required the space internally to provide for a public interface, via reception with adjoining key-cutting services while also providing private areas including training and seminar space; workshop, consisting of 3 car bays; office areas and hospitality area. Timber linings to the workshop and reception area exude warmth in contrast to the exterior cladding and bespoke furniture, combined with translucent internal polycarbonate screens provide privacy and practical and comfortable training and workspaces.
